Honduran Congress Committee refuses to certify election results

(MENAFN) The Standing Committee of the Honduran National Congress declared on Wednesday that it will not approve the outcomes of the recent general elections, citing both domestic manipulation and interference by US President Donald Trump as factors undermining the process.

“The National Congress will not validate a process tainted by internal pressures from organized crime structures linked to drug trafficking—gangs such as MS-13, Barrio 18, among others—and even less by external pressures and the direct violation of the freedom of voters,” the committee stated.

In its release, the committee referred to an “ongoing electoral coup” and accused Trump of exerting direct pressure and intimidation that disrupted the elections. It also highlighted concerns over domestic actors allegedly influencing the vote count.

The committee criticized the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP), claiming it “did not function as established.” Alleged leaked audio recordings published days before the vote reportedly captured National Electoral Council members discussing potential manipulation of results. Additionally, the committee said the electoral body compromised the mandatory biometric verification process, violating electoral law and “contaminating” tally sheets and the TREP system.

Trump was also singled out for publicly supporting conservative candidate Nasry Asfura, who currently leads by more than 42,000 votes. “We absolutely condemn the interference of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who, through public statements made 72 hours before the elections (November 30), threatened and coerced Honduran citizens, altering the free exercise of suffrage,” the statement read.

The committee referenced two specific posts from Trump on November 26 and 28, in which he openly backed Asfura and threatened to withhold aid. It concluded that such actions, combined with pressure, disinformation, and economic coercion, intimidated voters and distorted the electoral outcome.

“We affirm that a people subjected to threats cannot vote freely, and therefore elections conducted under such conditions lack full democratic and legal validity,” the committee emphasized.
