Honduran National Congress denounces Trump’s interference
In a statement, the committee described “the existence of an ongoing electoral coup” and accused Trump of directly influencing the election through pressure and intimidation, alongside local actors allegedly manipulating results. It said, “The National Congress will not validate a process tainted by internal pressures from organized crime structures linked to drug trafficking—gangs such as MS-13, Barrio 18, among others—and even less by external pressures and the direct violation of the freedom of voters.”
The committee also pointed to problems with the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP), claiming it “did not function as established.” Officials cited leaked audio recordings released days before the election, allegedly showing National Electoral Council members discussing ways to manipulate outcomes. The committee said the electoral body undermined mandatory biometric verification, violating electoral law and “contaminating” tally sheets and the TREP system.
Additionally, the committee condemned Trump for publicly supporting conservative candidate Nasry Asfura, who currently leads by more than 42,000 votes. “We absolutely condemn the interference of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who, through public statements made 72 hours before the elections (November 30), threatened and coerced Honduran citizens, altering the free exercise of suffrage,” the statement said. It referenced two posts from Nov. 26 and Nov. 28 in which Trump openly endorsed Asfura and threatened potential restrictions on aid.
